Principal or technical director – geotechnics | Wellington

As demand for our services continues to grow, we are seeking an experienced Principal or Technical Director in Geotechnics to lead and expand our geotechnical presence in Wellington and the Lower North Island. The opportunity

  • Lead & Grow: Drive the strategic expansion of PDP’s geotechnical services in the Lower North Island.
  • Technical Leadership: Provide expert guidance on diverse, complex geotechnical projects from concept to completion.
  • Business Development: Build and nurture client relationships to strengthen our local market presence.
  • Mentor Capability: Develop a high-performing team and foster technical growth within the wider national Geotechnics group.  

What you’ll do

  • Develop and grow geotechnical and engineering geology opportunities with existing and new clients across Wellington and the Lower North Island.
  • Lead and manage geotechnical projects including foundations, slope stability, dams, service corridors, mining and quarrying.
  • Plan, write, review, and sign off technical reports, and provide expert input into engineering design.
  • Manage project finances, contracts, tenders, and construction phase activities.
  • Work closely with other PDP workgroups, particularly Planning, Contaminated Land, Water Infrastructure, and Water Resources.
  • Build strong relationships with clients ranging from local authorities to private sector organisations.
  • Engage with regulators and other stakeholders to support successful project delivery.

What you’ll bring

  • A degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, or Engineering Geology, or an equivalent qualification.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in geotechnical engineering or engineering geology, with consultancy experience preferred.
  • Chartered Professional Engineer or Chartered Engineering Geologist status with Engineering New Zealand, or the ability to obtain this.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with confidence engaging at senior levels.
  • Demonstrated leadership capability, including mentoring and supporting others.
  • Sound judgement and problem‑solving skills to deliver practical outcomes for clients.
