Back in 2020, PDP completed a project for Firstgas to enhance the resilience of its transmission pipeline network in the North Island, which is essential to supplying natural gas to kiwi homes, businesses and major industry throughout the North Island.
During routine monitoring and maintenance works, geohazards were identified near the pipeline, positioned on a steep slope. Assessing the risks of slope instability and erosion and the potential impact on the pipeline, our team worked closely with Firstgas to consider the options to protect the pipeline.
The preferred engineering solution included the following tasks:
- Removing mature and die-off pine trees.
- Reprofiling the slopes by removing excess easement fill.
- Slope stabilisation with the installation of soil nails with high tensile steel wire mesh and erosion control matting.
PDP was involved in the geohazard assessment, site investigation, engineering design and provided technical support during construction, including contractor tender reviews, site monitoring and inspections.
Once completed, we had successfully improved the stability of the slope, ensuring the pipeline’s overall safety and operational longevity.
Our work with Firstgas highlights PDP’s commitment to delivering effective geotechnical solutions, by collaborating and working closely with our clients from the planning stages through to completion.
