Fuel Spill Emergency Response and Environmental Management

PDP oversaw remedial works and environmental monitoring following a diesel fuel spill event at a rural property. Approximately 1,300L of diesel had leaked from an aboveground tank and soaked into the ground immediately surrounding the tank to the water table.

PDP carried out environmental services to assess the ground contamination, complete soil and groundwater sampling, oversee remedial excavations and undertake a risk assessment. The immediate response to the spill involved engaging a civil contractor to carry out initial excavations in the spill area. The strategy adopted for the remedial works involved the removal of the majority of the impacted material and completing validation sampling of the surrounding soil to ensure any remaining petroleum hydrocarbon impacts were suitable for the continued land use activities and protection of nearby receptors.

Due to diesel reaching the groundwater, an assessment of the risks to groundwater quality was completed. Groundwater samples were collected from onsite wells to understand the risks to nearby groundwater users and a neighbouring water race located downgradient.

Due to the removal of the source contamination, sampling results and the separation distance of receptors, the potential risk from any remaining impacts was expected to be low and the property could continue using groundwater for irrigation and drinking.
