Geohazards Emergency Response to Extreme Rainfall Events – North Island Lifeline Networks 

PDP assisted First Gas Limited with emergency response on their gas pipeline network related to the 2023 extreme rainfall events across the upper North Island and the North Island East Coast. The response also involved the Channel Terminal Services Limited Marsden Point to Auckland pipeline. The pipelines traverse a wide range of rock and soil types including those susceptible to instability geohazards. The rainfall events resulted in over 100 new or reactivated instability and erosion geohazards across the pipeline networks. Initial emergency response included multiple event-related helicopter line flights and urgent geotechnical site visits. Follow-up geohazard workshops addressed risk assessment and a coordinated and prioritised response for sites requiring further action. This included remediation and monitoring measures to ensure the continuity of gas and petroleum products supply to the storm damaged regions.
