Ministry for the Environment Waste Composition and Landfill Gas Assessments

Completion of tailored SWAP surveys including visual surveys and sort-and-weigh audits at Class 2, 3 and 4 landfills to provide a real-time assessment of incoming waste composition. Waste composition as a percentage of total tonnage was estimated via visual surveys of waste loads and linked weigh-bridge records. The visual surveys were supported by undertaking sort-and-weigh audits which allowed for an assessment of the accuracy of the visual method compared to sorting and weighing the waste. HSQE planning limited the field technicians interaction with active tip areas and truck movements and promoted safety in the completion of the work. SWAP summary data was delivered to the client in both digital format and reporting format to support. Landfill gas monitoring using handheld gas detectors was also undertaken over the landfill surfaces in order to assess the landfill gas emissions from the various class of landfill being investigated.
