Ōtaki to North Levin Highway – Air Quality Assessment

New Zealand Transport Authority – Waka Kotahi (NZTA) engaged us to assess the air quality effects of the Ōtaki to north of Levin (Ō2NL) highway. We undertook an assessment of the air quality effects from the construction of the highway, and the potential pollutant emissions from vehicles once the highway was operational.

A qualitative assessment was conducted to evaluate dust emissions from construction, and we also provided advice on mitigation measures to employ to reduce any adverse dust effects on the surrounding environment.

The operational effects of emissions from vehicles driving along the highway were assessed using an atmospheric dispersion model utilising vehicle emission rates and local meteorological data. The final assessment provided an understanding of the change in pollution concentrations affecting the existing state highway and the new Ō2NL highway.

With the PDP assessment, NZTA successfully obtained an air discharge consent for the construction and operation of the Ō2NLhighway.
