Paraparaumu Wastewater Treatment Plant Overflow Pond Upgrade

Kāpiti Coast District Council (KCDC) engaged Pattle Delamore Partners (PDP) to complete the design and undertake construction monitoring for a project to upgrade the overflow pond at Paraparaumu Wastewater Treatment Plant. The aim is to increase the pond capacity from 25,000m³ to 40,000m³ to counter climate change and population growth effects within the catchment.

The treatment plant is operated by KCDC and serves the communities of Paraparaumu, Waikanae, and Raumati. The treatment plant has a large overflow pond which is used to temporarily hold wastewater in a heavy rainfall event when the inflow to the treatment plant is too great to treat. The pond needed to be upgraded to future proof against climate change and provide additional capacity for new developments in Paraparaumu and Waikanae. KCDC’s Contractor excavated the pond to increase its capacity to over 43,000 cubic metres achieving additional 3,000m³. The work also included the construction of a new treated effluent disposal pipeline, removal of old asbestos pipes in the pond, relocation of a solar panel array, and construction of a new concrete and rock spillway. Once the pond was excavated, a polyethylene liner was installed to prevent wastewater from seeping into the ground.
