PDP partnered with Chatham Islands Electricity Limited (CIEL) to secure resource consents for an ambitious renewable energy project — a key step in the islands’ transition away from diesel-generated electricity.
The project involved installing three refurbished Vestas V27 225kW wind turbines at Point Durham. Modest in scale by today’s standards, these turbines were carefully restored to extend their working life by another 20 years — a smart, sustainable solution that repurposes existing inf rastructure.
PDP prepared a comprehensive consent application and worked closely with the project team and stakeholders to address potential effects. Our early engagement approach helped secure written approvals from all affected parties, enabling the consent to be processed on a non-notified basis. The Council backed the project, recognising its wider community and environmental benefits.
We collaborated with the project manager, engineer, and landscape architect to complete Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments, and engaged directly with iwi, landowners, and the Council to align on consent conditions.
This project delivers meaningful social and economic benefits for the Chatham Islands: reducing reliance on imported diesel, improving energy resilience, lowering costs, and cutting emissions. It’s a future-focused energy solution — and one we’re proud to have supported.
