Storm Recovery Road Remediation – Marlborough Road Recovery Panel

As part of the Marlborough Roads Recovery Panel, PDP has assessed and provided remediation options, some of which involved PDP undertaking detailed design of retaining walls, for more than 10 landslides on roads in the Marlborough Sounds caused by storm events in 2021 and 2022. A key landslide on Queen Charlotte Drive required initial landslide assessment and geotechnical investigation, remedial works optioneering, detailed design and construction monitoring associated with reinstating the road.

The preferred design comprised a tied back H-pile retaining wall which required supplementary drilling, a geological slope model and slope stability analysis.

PDP employed a range of measures to ensure the design met the Client’s specific level of service requirements and to minimise cost. These included using readily available construction materials, a flexible design that could be adjusted during construction to manage varying ground conditions and adopting a remedial system that was already in use on the network to simplify ongoing monitoring and maintenance.
