The Whangamarino Wetland, spanning 7,000 hectares in the Lower Waikato River catchment is a diverse ecosystem of peat bogs, fens and lakes, making it the second largest wetland in Aotearoa. Waikato Regional Council operates several flood control gates around this wetland, and PDP manages nine continuous monitoring sites to support compliance with resource consent conditions.
These sites monitor turbidity, water level, dissolved oxygen, and flow. Our responsibilities include routine validations, calibrations, sampling and gauging of flow and sediment to gather essential data on water quality and quantity. The wetland monitoring sites face various challenges, including stagnant water, sedimentation, erosion, algal blooms, invasive weeds, and koi carp.
